Give Big to Our Communities During Seattle Restaurant Week

It makes sense that chefs and food workers would have big hearts. People who choose to feed and nourish our communities are oftentimes the first to step in and go the extra mile to help when they can. For example, during the early pandemic, several restaurants and chefs formed the Seattle Kitchen Collective, making free meals for those in need. And this February, over 100 restaurants participated in a fundraiser for the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, raising $100,000 in a weekend.

By raising funds for urgent causes and drawing awareness to important issues, Seattle’s restaurants make impactful change for their communities and neighborhoods. We’re honored to spotlight a few participants who will be fundraising for various causes during Seattle Restaurant Week.

One of those causes is Viva Farms, a bilingual (Spanish-English) nonprofit farm business incubator and training program established in 2009. Operating over 100 acres between two locations in Western Washington, they lower the barriers for beginning farmers, and create the opportunity for success.

Support for Viva Farms comes at an urgent time. Following recent Executive Orders, many of their contractually-bound federal funds are inaccessible. Being 70% federally funded, Viva Farms’ future is uncertain as they face gut-wrenching decisions about furloughs and catastrophic cuts to programming. Losing what Viva provides to our food system would weaken our resilience as a community by eliminating the land, resources, and support that 35 incubating farm businesses rely on, along with nearly 100 jobs, and reducing our local supply of organic produce by $3M per year. This SRW, Askatu Bakery by Liberated Foods and Pidgin Cooperative are both raising money for Viva Farms. You can learn more and support Viva directly here.

A number of SRW participating restaurants are participating in our Give A Meal program, raising funds for Good Food Kitchens, a program inspired by the Seattle Kitchen Collective that directly funds restaurants and chefs who make free meals for our communities.

Some current GFK partner restaurants include Mojito, making anywhere from 125 up to 500 meals per week for the University District Food Bank; catering company That Brown Girl Cooks! team preparing 120 meals per week for the Southeast Seattle Senior Center; Spice Waala, making 100 meals per week for Mary’s Place and Community Lunch of Capitol Hill; and Chu Minh Tofu Deli also serves up over 200 meals per week at their Sunday lunch. With or without funding support, all of these businesses continue making free meals at their own cost. You can support them in supporting others by donating directly through Good Food Kitchens

Any amount of funds raised through Give A Meal goes directly to GFK and other meal programs, compensating chefs for their labor, and covers the cost of food — sourced from local farms wherever possible — helping to strengthen our local food economy.

Head to the SRW website for an up-to-date listing of participating SRW restaurants, and select Community Fundraising or Give A Meal from the Value filter options to see the restaurants supporting our communities!
